Preserve® Gimme 5 Program Partners Reach Out to Recyclers with a Big ‘Thank You’ for 50 Tons of Recycled #5 Plastic in 2010

Thousands of consumers across the nation took time out to recycle through the Gimme 5 program this year. And the numbers prove it: The program has reached its goal of 50 tons -- or 100,000 pounds of recycled yogurt cups, hummus and cottage cheese containers, and countless other tremendously reusable #5 plastic packages. That’s the equivalent of 6.4 million Stonyfield Farm® yogurt containers, 1.3 million Tom’s of Maine® deodorant containers, or 500,000 Brita® filters!

GoodBiz113 profilee Preserve® ["Recycline-Stonyfield Partnership Milks Resources to Benefit the Environment, Consumers and Each Other"] launched the Gimme 5 program in 2009 by working with Whole Foods Market to offer a #5 plastic polypropylene [PP] recycling option in their stores.

Now, Preserve Gimme 5 collection bins are located in more than 200 Whole Foods Market stores in most regions of the U.S., as well as select independent cooperative markets.

The Whole Foods Market Green Mission team leaders and team members, plus other in-store representatives, support the program at the ground level and keep the program running smoothly at the collection sites.

Behind the #5 plastic collected is a rapidly spreading consumer wave of interest and activity. Consumers have incorporated the program into their daily lives by collecting their #5 plastics and dropping them off at participating Whole Foods Market stores or co-ops. They take an active role to encourage their friends and family members to get on board with Gimme 5. Additionally, they’ve created school collection programs, and some who don’t live near collection sites are even shipping their #5 plastic to Preserve on their own dime.

The program provides consumers with a much-needed outlet to recycle their #5 plastic. In turn, consumers’ participation in the program helps to keep reusable resources such as oil and natural gas captured in #5 plastic packages out of landfills. This year, the Preserve Gimme 5 program received more than double the amount of #5 plastic collected last year.

All Gimme 5 program partners use #5 plastic as an integral element of their products or packaging. They have joined Gimme 5 to encourage the reuse of this material. #5 is increasingly being recognized as a more benign plastic, and is the top choice for companies looking to offer a versatile high-quality, yet low-impact, plastic.

"We want to thank all those Gimme 5 recyclers out there who have supported and helped to grow this program," said Preserve Founder and CEO Eric Hudson. "Gimme 5’ers have demonstrated that recycling makes sense; it’s better for the earth than tossing the used packages. Preserve has supported this program with Life Cycle Assessment tools which demonstrated that the Gimme 5 program is better from start to finish than sending perfectly reusable resources to landfills. 50 Tons of Thanks for your efforts for the earth."

One way the Gimme 5 partners are thanking recyclers for their participation is by making a donation of $1,000 on their behalf to the Whole Planet Foundation this Thanksgiving. The mission of Whole Planet Foundation [WPF], a Whole Foods Market foundation, is to empower the poor by providing microcredit loans that give them an opportunity to create or expand home-based businesses and lift themselves out of poverty.

Preserve and its Gimme 5 partners are teaming up to reach out to consumers participating in the program. On Nov. 18, 2010, the Gimme 5 "50 Tons of Thanks" campaign launched on partner websites and social media outlets with special messages to consumers as well as special offers.

Dec. 1 Marks World AIDS Day; (PRODUCT) RED Hits $50 Million Contribution Milestone

Yesterday, just one day before marking World AIDS Day 2007, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announced that contributions from (PRODUCT) RED partners -- including GoodBiz113 ad partners American Express, Apple and Motorola -- have reached over $50 million.

This cumulative total, achieved since (RED) was launched in 2006 by Bono and Bobby Shriver, outstrips, by far, all previous private-sector contributions to the Global Fund, and creates a new benchmark for engaging business in the global fight against AIDS in Africa.

(PRODUCT) RED has become one of the largest consumer-based income-generating initiatives by the private sector for an international humanitarian cause. As the Fund looks to existing and new donors to help raise $6 billion to $8 billion annually to finance programs globally to fight AIDS, TB and malaria, (PRODUCT) RED has become a significant and promising new source of funds.

"(PRODUCT) RED has brought about a major change in the way the private sector contributes to global causes," said Dr. Michel Kazatchkine, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. "We applaud Bono and Bobby Shriver for their vision in establishing the campaign, and thank (RED), its partners and the consumers who've chosen (RED) for their leadership. The contributions of (PRODUCT) RED partners have already enabled hundreds of thousands of people to benefit from AIDS treatment, prevention and care."

(RED) was created to deliver a sustainable flow of private-sector funds to the Global Fund, and to raise public awareness about the AIDS emergency in Africa. (RED) partners are Gap, Hallmark, Apple, Motorola, Emporio Armani, American Express and Converse.

The partner contributions from the sale of (PRODUCT) RED products are sent directly to the Global Fund to invest in HIV/AIDS programs in Africa. No overhead is taken out of the (RED) money, which means there is 100% throughput to the identified Global Fund grants.

(RED) funds are already at work as part of Global Fund grants in Rwanda, Swaziland and Ghana, funding programs with a primary focus on the health of women and children. (RED) funds will continue to be disbursed to these grants as soon as the next scheduled disbursement requests are received and approved by the Global Fund.

Since its creation in 2002, the Global Fund has become the dominant, multilateral financer of programs to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, providing well over 20 percent of all international finance against AIDS, and two-thirds of global financing for TB and malaria.

So far, programs supported by the Global Fund have averted 2 million deaths through providing AIDS treatment for 1.1 million people, tuberculosis treatment for 2.8 million people, and through the distribution of 30 million insecticide-treated bed nets for the prevention of malaria worldwide.

About the Global Fund
The Global Fund is a unique global public/private partnership dedicated to attracting and disbursing additional resources to prevent and treat HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. This partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector, and affected communities represents a new approach to international health financing.

The Global Fund works in close collaboration with other bilateral and multilateral organizations to supplement existing efforts dealing with the three diseases.

About (RED)™ and (PRODUCT) RED
(RED)'s primary objective is to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funds for the Global Fund, to help fight AIDS in Africa. Companies whose products take on the (PRODUCT) RED mark contribute a significant percentage of the sales or portion of the profits from that product to the Global Fund to finance AIDS programs in Africa, with an emphasis on the health of women and children.

Current partners are: American Express [U.K. only], Apple, Converse, Gap, Emporio Armani, Motorola and Hallmark. MySpace.com is the first media sponsor in the United Kingdom, and MTV Networks is the first media sponsor in the U.S. For more information, visit http://www.joinred.com/.

Also, for World AIDS Day, The Killers turned their new Christmas single, "Don't Shoot Me Santa", (RED) -- with 100% of the proceeds to benefit the Global Fund, for investment in African AIDS programs. On Tuesday, Dec. 4, the single package -- including audio track and video -- arrives in stores. Click here to order from Amazon.com.

Bush Vetoes Bipartisan SCHIP Bill; 72% of Americans Favor Increased Children's Health Insurance Funding

One week after the U.S. Senate passed bipartisan legislation that will improve accessibility of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program [SCHIP] program -- a plan that provides health insurance for millions of kids who wouldn't otherwise have health care -- President Bush vetoed the bill to increase funding by $35 billion.

Why should GoodBiz113 readers care? First off, SCHIP is simply good, solid, humane legislation. Secondly, because Sens. John Kerry [D-Mass.] and Olympia Snowe [R-Maine], both of whom devotedly serve on the Committee for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, had attached an amendment to the legislation to enroll more children in the program -- i.e., children of small-business owners, their employeees, self-employed people, and entrepreneurs.

Bush's proposal of a mere $5 billion funding increase would not have even kept pace with inflation and spiraling medical costs. Further, for a president whose generous tax cuts for the wealthy, and whose administration has erased a budget surplus, crying for frugality now seems unconscionably incongruent.

Recent polls have shown that an overwhelming majority of people -- 72%, according to a Washington Post-ABC News survey -- favor the proposed SCHIP funding measure. Fully 86% of the American people support reauthorizing SCHIP.

More specifically, as GoodBiz113 reported last week ["OPEN: Small-Business Owners Hold the Line on Hiring, Remain Focused on Growth in Uncertain Economy"], nearly early eight in 10 [79%] small businesses would consider proposed health-care policy solutions as a way to make health care accessible. More than half support a plan that would "ensure every child in the U.S. has health insurance" [58%], or "provide tax credits to low-income workers to help pay for health care" [54%].

Still, the president stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the will of Americans on this issue -- just as he does on the war in Iraq, which he contends is key to our nation's security. He fails to recognize that security of the nation's children also is in jeopardy when it comes to lack of health care.

"If government-supported health care is good enough for President Bush, why isn’t it good enough for America’s children?" poses senior Sen. Ted Kennedy [D-Mass., pictured above], who introduced SCHIP legislation 10 years ago. "We can be a voice for the nation's children -- a voice that every member of Congress needs to hear. If government-supported health care is good enough for Congress, it’s good enough for America’s children."

Exercise Your Voice
On Oct. 18, Congress will vote on overriding Bush's veto. If you'd like to voice your views to your elected officials before then, please do so at your earliest possible opportunity.
